Students March in Protest of Governor Recall Gray Davis Team Joins Anti-Davis Protest (SACRAMENTO) – The Recall Gray Davis Committee joined 10,000 community college students at a rally at the State Capitol to protest the planned massive budget cuts to community colleges. The cuts are proposed by Governor Gray Davis in a sinister attempt to bail himself out of the budget mess he created. Republicans, Democrats, Independents, Greens and Libertarians comprised both the crowd and the roster of speakers who addressed the huge assembly of community college students, teachers and other anti-Davis activists. If Davis’ plan is approved, cuts to the funding of community colleges will surpass $530,000,000. In addition, there will be massive fee increases of 118% per credit. This will make community colleges too expensive for many middle and lower income families and students. It will also mean a mass reduction in the number of classes available and the firing of thousands of college instructors throughout the state. Protestors stood united in their efforts to demand that Davis not balance the budget on the backs of community college students and faculty. The Recall Gray Davis Committee marched with the crowd, distributed over 6,000 Recall Gray Davis fliers, had their pictures taken with students with our Recall Gray Davis t-shirts and signed up supporters to help distribute recall petitions.
